Chaplain’s Corner

Dear Fellow Laborers in the Lord’s Vineyard,
Much of the work that the Lord has me focusing on most recently is to assist the Men in Blue (MiB) with adjusting to the new realities that have accompanied the global Covid-19 pandemic. I am pleased to say that many of the Kairos Inside Brothers have taken this challenge seriously and are not only discipling their cellmates (“cellies”) but other men, as well, when they are out on the yard for exercise and free time. It has been a tremendous blessing on each yard to know that the Kairos Community Inside has not only answered the call to go and make disciples but they are faithfully bearing one another’s burdens and thus fulfilling the law of our Lord Jesus!
After preparing to begin our initial reopening of programing and religious services, we were given word from CDCR Headquarters that we would need to wait a bit longer and recalibrate before we could move forward with our plan to reopen. I will keep you posted as things progress.
Finally, I have been asked to assume the role as Acting Community Resources Manager for the next two to four months; as such, my focus will shift from primarily focusing solely on Protestant Programing to a broader engagement with the Community and Rehabilitative programing. My tenure begins Monday October 5, 2020. I will still have the same email and if you need to reach me by phone you can do so by calling the CRM’s Office. Please continue to keep all of us in your prayers and feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or wish to assist from the outside until things reopen. May the Lord, bless and keep all of you in His gracious care and irreplaceable peace.
Faithfully,
Chaplain Martin
Monthly Spiritual Reflection
“This is my Son, whom I love; with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Matt.17:5)
Note that Jesus never says, “worship me” or “bow down before me” or “applaud me.”  Jesus says simply, “follow me.” Lord, this means that I need to take you off the pedestal, unfreeze you from your static pose, launch you into the world, and follow you. Not admire you, but follow you. How? By listening to you, first and foremost. I need to get off the phone, turn off the TV, shut off the noise, and listen. It is a journey of the soul, and it involves challenge, suffering, joy, frustration, and wide-eyed surprises. It means I need to change. Yes, Lord, I’ll follow you – thanks for asking. Please lead the way.

Ongoing Ministry
Since volunteers are currently unable to enter the prison, we are pleased to announce we have been conducting weekly Virtual Prayer and Share groupings amongst ourselves. If you are not actively participating in one of these groups, we highly encourage you to do so. They are a wonderful way to stay connected to the Kairos community and maintain positive spiritual momentum. You can signup and see the schedule of these groups HERE

While we diligently remain in prayer for all of our 2020 Prayer Focus Points, each month we will select one that we want to be intentional as a community to pray for.
Seeking to use our time well, let us unite our forces and pray that we would Be Known for Being Disciples of Jesus Christ; Demonstrating our Christ Like Character of Love, Humility, Meekness, Obedience, Servanthood, Compassion, Forgiveness, Kindness, Mercy, Generosity, Being Quick to Listen and Slow to Anger, etc.
Upcoming Kairos Events
We are excited to announce that sometime within the next few months, we will be holding a Kairos “Volunteer Enrichment” event. This will be a weekend retreat held outside the prison for the purpose of training, enriching, and recruiting volunteers. Please keep the planning of this event in prayer, as it has great potential to bless our community in a multitude of ways! Stay tuned for more information.
Orientation/Clearances
The institution is not processing volunteer clearances at this time. Please keep the reopening of the institution in prayer.
